SOS!!!

It never rained but poured for Pearson Nkhoma. The Media for development final year student at Chancellor College has his two developmental research papers accepted for presentation at the Third International Conference on Research and Development to be held this year at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria from 25th to 26th of June.

The overzealous student explains that he took the challenge to submit his two abstracts when he saw the advert on College notice Boards when he went for another presentation at the 2008 Research and Dissemination Conference held at Chancellor College from the 8th to 9th April. He presented at outstanding paper on Malawi ’s performance on the MDGs.

About his papers, the visionary students outlines that he likes writing about development because that is his area of study.

“In the first paper titled From Poverty to Prosperity: A Critical assessment on why Poverty is Increasing in the Third World Countries in the Face of various Development Strategies with the case study of Malawi , I attempt to explores factors that have made poverty eradication efforts fail to bring home effective results”

“The other paper, tracking the MDGs in Malawi: A Critical Assessment on Whether Malawi is on Track to Achieve the Goals by 2015 with a Focus on Poverty is specific focus on two goals, Goal number while giving a synopsis of other goals. This paper unlike the one I presented at Chancellor Colleges, provide a thorough analysis of Malawian performance as regards the first goal of the MDGs, while the one I presented at Chancellor College was too broad and tackled all the goals”

In the paper about goal 1 of the MDGs, the young man attempts to assess, review and evaluate the performance of the country towards achieving the goal by 2015. “I summarize the progress of the country with an aim of providing a clearer understanding of the constraints Malawi is facing on attaining the goals. With this evaluation, areas of focus to achieve the goals are outlined. While the other paper can be referenced as well so that efforts to eradicate poverty are effective,” explains Pearson.

Asked why he decided to take up the challenge and submit two abstract which initially academic staffs like professors and doctors respond to, the jubilant Pearson explains that he takes up any challenges that comes in his way because he believes the youth are leaders of today. For this, Pearson quotes the former UN Secretary General that "Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society's margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies." With these inspiration words, Pearson explains indirectly why he decided to take up the challenge and submitted abstracts of his papers. Prophetic as it might appear, his abstracts were successful. Taking into account the peer review processes that abstracts pass through, one can only be left with one conclusion: Malawi needs people of his caliber as development agents.

“it is really a challenge for me because papers by doctors and professors are rejected and to have two of my papers recommended for presentation, it is really a blessing”.

However, not all is good news for this first born in the family of 6, who recently lost his father. “The conference is self sponsored and requires me to raise my own accommodation and transport money which totals up to K180 000 (about US$1 300). But I have only managed to raise MK10 000. I am talking with willing sponsors to come to my rescue. Currently, I am trying to link up with National Bank and NICO to see how they can help me”

Asked what if he fails to raise the money, with a somber face, he states that “If I fail to raise the money by the 18th of June, I will just send my papers on email to be presented in absentia but the impact would not be the same if I attend, hence it is a must that I find a sponsor.

Looking at his papers, shaped by his studies, Pearson likes writing development articles some of which get published in the country’s national papers. The whiz kid also authored a paper at the 2007 National Language Symposium focusing on the role of local languages in national development.

“I write development articles because I believe that I can bring positive change and assists in developing Malawi . No country in the world ever developed using foreign hands. As a youth and Malawian I have the potential to change things positively” adds Pearson.
